Land Acknowledgment

I respectfully acknowledge that I reside on land included in Cession 118, signed on Sept. 18, 1823. This land is the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary land of the Calusa, Mascogo, Miccosukee, Seminole, and Taino peoples and their descendants. This statement is one small step in acknowledging the history that brought those who live here today to reside on this land, and to help us seek understanding of our place within that history. Ownership of land is itself a colonial concept and I am mindful of all that the legacy of colonialism has meant for indigenous peoples, native creatures, and natural habitats.
